Tom Ford’s ability to think on his feet is what landed him his first job at designer Cathy Hardwick’s sportswear company. When asked in his interview to name his favorite European designer, he responded by saying Armani, after noticing Hardwick wearing the label.

Ford’s intuitiveness wasn’t an isolated incident. When he took a designer job at Gucci, he became chief of women’s ready-to-wear apparel, shoes and menswear within six months, eventually replacing Richard Lumberton as design director in 1992.

Despite reservations from Guccio Gucci himself concerning Ford’s design choices, he managed to increase Gucci’s sales by 90%, turning the Milan based fashion house from near bankruptcy into one of the most profitable brands on the planet.
Ford also became the largest individual shareholder in the company by the early 2000’s. In 2004, he started his own label for “intelligent, cultured women who know their own style.” He was a leader in the “see now, buy now” fashion philosophy, whereby potential customers don’t have to wait months after a product is displayed during a fashion show, and can instead purchase said piece immediately after its unveiling.

While he opened hundreds of flagship stores all over the world, Ford explored another artistic side of himself. He launched his production company, Fade to Black, in 2005. Several years later, Ford made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film, A Single Man, starring Colin Firth, Nicholas Hoult and Julianne Moore.

“DRESSING WELL IS A FORM OF GOOD MANNERS.”
Following a professor mourning the death of his lover in the 1960s, Ford’s timeless aesthetic shines through the simple yet powerful dialogue and wardrobe choices, which manage to politely steal the spotlight and enhance every scene.

Ford’s latest film, Nocturnal Animals, is enjoying the same critical and commercial acclaim, and is further cementing his reputation as an auteur behind the camera. The movie won Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival (where it also received a ten minute standing ovation), as well as earning a BAFTA for Ford’s direction.

As one reviewer stated “It’s clear that Tom Ford wasn’t just someone with money that one day thought that’ll be fun to make movies. We are facing a new and great author.”
